Karlskrona UNESCO Heritage Walk & Archipelago Lunch
A Small-Group Shore Excursion through Sweden’s UNESCO Naval City
Karlskrona is not a city that happened by chance. It was deliberately planned, designed, and built as Sweden’s naval stronghold — spread across islands, fortifications, and waterways that still shape everyday life today. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still home to an active Swedish naval base. This tour walks you through all of it, from the tender pier into the heart of that story – on foot, at a relaxed pace, with time for conversation, views and photographs. The tour ends with a Swedish tasting lunch beside the sea at Blomlöfs on Saltö. Maximum 10 guests.
Tour description
Your guide meets you at Karlskrona’s tender pier at Sparresalen. From the waterfront, the walk leads up to the city’s monumental main square, one of the grandest Baroque urban spaces in Sweden. Here the story of Karl XI, Sweden’s great-power ambitions, and the creation of an entirely new city on a Baltic archipelago comes to life. The square’s scale, its two imposing churches, and the symmetry of its plan all reflect the young king’s vision of a naval capital built to last.
From the square, you continue to the wooden Admiralty Church. Built in 1685 as a temporary place of worship for the naval community, it has remained in use for more than three centuries. When accessible, guests step inside to experience its extraordinary wooden interior.
Passing the ceremonial entrance to Karlskrona Naval Base, the walk moves through the edge of a living heritage site: the historic dockyard that has shaped this city since its founding, still operating today as part of Sweden’s active naval fleet. The contrast between monument and everyday life is part of what makes Karlskrona unlike anywhere else in Sweden.
From here, the route leaves the grand naval centre behind. Next stop Björkholmen – a quiet wooden neighbourhood of narrow lanes and painted timber houses, once home to the shipyard workers who built and maintained the Swedish fleet. The pace here is unhurried. There is time to stop, look, and ask questions.
The final stretch leads across to Saltö. On the waterfront, the view opens across the islands towards Brändaholm’s distinctive red-and-white summer cottages and back across the city skyline. It is a natural pause point and the end of the walk.
Lunch is at Blomlöfs, a family-run seafood business rooted in the region. The Swedish tasting menu brings together flavours of the coast and southern Sweden: herring, smoked salmon, prawns, Swedish meatballs and the regional speciality kroppkakor, served with traditional condiments. The menu is consistent throughout the season. After lunch, a dedicated vehicle returns guests directly to the cruise pier.
The full walk is approximately two hours on foot, with frequent stops for stories, photographs and views. This is not a march between landmarks – it is an introduction to a city at the pace that city deserves.
