On 1 June 1676, off the coast of Öland, the Swedish warship Kronan exploded and sank in less than a minute. Of the 850 men on board, only 40 survived. The ship took with it an extraordinary world; gold coins, personal belongings, weapons, instruments – all perfectly preserved on the seabed for three centuries.
