For 900 years, Borgholm castle has stood on its precipice, looking out over the Kalmar Strait. It has been a fort, a stronghold, a Renaissance castle, a Baroque palace and a prestige project in many guises before it was destroyed in a fire in the early 19th century. The ruin would become one of the most magnificent in Sweden, noted among the most famous cultural historical buildings, and part of the country´s cultural heritage.
